21st Century Learners’ Conference – Creston, IA

Personal Notes:»

I may be a surprise to some of you, that we’ve been “integrating” technology into education environments for more than 30 years. It was 1981 that I first started using personal computers, and the next year I had 11 Radio Shack (TRS-80) Model II computers in my classroom. But still, they seem foreign to the classroom, to teaching, and to learning.

However, computers and the Internet are now an essential and critical part of learning – for all of us, every day. So as we seek to learn what technology-infused classrooms look like, perhaps the best place to look is outside that classroom – and even better yet, to look at how our children use this digital, networked, and overwhelming information environment.

I’d like to spend some time examining that, qualities of our children’s outside-the-classroom information experiences, or their ‘native’ information experience (Prensky, 2001). It’s about “Cracking the Code of the ‘Native’ Information Experience.”

I will also spend some time talking about infographics and data visualization and their applications in the classroom. It’s about making numbers tell their story, but converting them to visuals You can do it. Your learners can do it. In addition, I will be doing a session on how professional educators are using these digital/networked tools to learn, to cultivate personal learning networks.

It is a pleasure to be back in Iowa. My plan is to get some great photos on my way in this afternoon (Thursday). If I get any, I will link to them here.
